Word Beads for Week of Jul 23, 2006

Word Beads is a weekly blog assignment where five words are randomly picked. The players’ task is to turn these into a useful text, like a story or a poem. This week the following words were required:

  • retrievable
  • cymbal
  • unconnected
  • kilovolt
  • die
 The absentminded professor,
Is not much of a dresser.
Today he wears a tinkling cymbal,
Which he claims is merely a symbol
Of his great endeavor to be heard
 By the sizable undergraduate herd.
But their interest is not retrievable,
Until he finds a solution; unbeatable:
 Let’s electrocute the bunch!
A few kilovolt on a hunch!
But the professor’s mind is in another place,
With the unconnected electrical plug he errs,
And though no student did die and go up in flares,
They now listen to every word their master airs.

Word Beads for Week of Jul 16, 2006

Word Beads is a weekly blog assignment where five words are randomly picked. The players’ task is to turn these into a useful text, like a story or a poem. This week the following words were required:

  • Margarine
  • Eminence
  • Visible
  • Acclimatization
  • Smog

I itch to take a stab at this and just having read a fascinating discussion on Ask MetaFilter about light verse, this is the format I choose to abuse:

The unctuous luster of her shimmering hair,
Failed to turn Dorothy particularly fair.
 Lumps of gravy-reeking margarine,
Visible on forehead, running down the chin,

Where an eminence of oil congealed.
Yet, the gory of it all was not revealed,
Since Shanghai smog sheltered Dorothy’s apparition,
 While flies, facially, commenced acclimatization.
